One Week From Vermont

A week from today, I'll be in Rutland Vermont. I've waited about five years to get back there, for my third genealogy trip. By this time next week, I'll have met a new distant cousin, Karen, who lives in the area, and spent the day walking cemeteries in and around Rutland looking for clues to my ancestors.

This will be my first trip with a laptop, which holds my entire family history, so I'll be able to do near realtime updates. I also bought a good digital recorder, so I can record stories told by my new cousins.

I'll spend three days in the Rutland area, including a day trip to Hartford CT for a cousin meeting, then move to the Burlington area to meet more new cousins and research at the State Dept of Vital Records.

Going Backwards....

Wow, this really bothers me. It's one small step for LA, one giant leap backwards for San Diego....I say boycott KNSD until they understand how wrong this is.

From SignOnSanDiego.com:

San Diego forecasts to be reported from L.A.
2:00 a.m. June 26, 2009
Beginning Monday, local weather forecasts on KNSD/Channel 39 (Cable 7) will be brought to you from Los Angeles.
The local NBC affiliate announced yesterday that KNSD's weather reports will now be done by Fritz Coleman of sister station NBC4 in Los Angeles. Coleman – who will still do the weather for NBC4 – will replace KNSD weather reporter Pat Brown, who has been with the station for eight years. Her last day on the air is today.
According to KNSD, Coleman will do his forecasts from a “specially equipped set” at the NBC4 studios. His forecasts will air weekdays during the 4, 5, 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts. –K.P.

Serra Mesa Library Trail

Saturday we made great progress on this trail, thanks to an Eagle Scout from Tierrasanta and his troop. Despite the heat, the effort took out lots and lots of iceplant, re-routed a key part of the trail, widened several segments, and installed some signs identifying native plants. There is still some trailwork to be done, but again, lots of progress was made.

While working, I heard a mockingbird calling a warning, and figured it to be a hawk causing him concern rather than a cat, given the tall trees and the canyon setting. Sure enough, I saw a Cooper's Hawk fly out of one of the eucalyptus, being chased by three hummingbirds and the mockingbird! Later I also heard a Nuttal's Woodpecker. What a nice little canyon this is, and now even better.

Shrink Palladium at Aero Door To Door Campaign

Three more hours going door to door today, this time in my neighborhood. I went to the cul de sac of Elyssee, then down the east side. This included my buddy Al's house, and they invited me inside. The big, old, homeless camp at the AquaTera fence had finally been cleaned up, as had several other much smaller ones nearby. Al and I have been trying to get the landowner to clean these up for at least eight months. So, a victory in persistence.

I also walked the south side of Chantilly Ave, from Murray Ridge to Escondido Ave. I collected four donations today, totalling $120, not bad. I took all the money over to Cindy's, and found she had collected $170 from a short street in Abbots Hill! Nice! I know there are two donations waiting for Myra in the PO box, too, so it will be cool to see what today's total is in donations. We also got three new people to join our door to door campaign: George, Monica, and Brad, a 33% increase over last weekend, so very important.

I went to Peggy Lacy's house, found out she had a heart attack two weeks ago. She was up, but looked thin and pale. I also reconnected with Wes, and he says he can open the gate some mornings. He says they travel a lot, but I told him that wasn't a big problem. I had talked with him a year ago, but had gotten his e-mail address wrong, and never bothered to get it right. Now that Calvin says his crew cannot open the gate, at the Murray Ridge Park, on Saturdays for the month of February, we need someone on it.

Obama and Josia

I finally got back into my blog after months of being locked out. Of course, the title means little now, since Barack Obama was elected and has installed a stellar Cabinet! Who would have thought this was possible even a half a year ago?! It feels like life imitating Hollywood: we may really have a Josia Bartlet administration IN THE WHITE HOUSE!

However, we can now turn our attention to the City Administration, which is, naturally, closer to home, and still full of big problems. More next time.
